This is the numbers of babies that were born at Auschwitz

Auschwitz wasn't built for birth.

It was a machine designed to extinguish life, a factory calibrated for mass murder.

But even in that smoke-choked hell, life found a way.

Babies were born in filth, beneath the shadow of the chimneys, their cries a defiant whisper against the roar of the Nazi death machine.

Records – when they exist at all – are smudged and incomplete.

But the whispers persist.

Stanisława Leszczyńska, the Polish midwife, her hands forced to serve the Reich, spoke of delivering thousands of babies.

Three thousand acts of defiance, three thousand mothers clutching at hope even as the world spiraled into madness.

But maybe those numbers fall short.

The Auschwitz Museum, their careful research painting a picture just as grim, cites hundreds of births.

Likely more, considering the chaos, the Nazis' obsession with destroying records, and the countless women who vanished into the camps, their pregnancies hidden until it was too late.

These babies – they weren't meant to survive.

Many were drowned, at the orders of the SS butchers.

Others froze, starved, fell prey to the diseases that festered in those barracks.

A lucky few might have been sent off for 'Germanization', stolen from their mothers and raised to deny their heritage.

A handful, a bare handful, lived to see the Soviets break open the gates in '45.

Understand, there's no military terminology for this.

No tactical advantage gained or lost in the birthing block.

Children don't have strategic value, not to men like those who ran Auschwitz.

These births were a threat, a stubborn strain of humanity refusing to be snuffed out.

They were hope in its most desperate form, and the Nazis did everything in their power to crush it.

Every child born in Auschwitz was a victory in a war against absolute evil.

Survivors in Dachau berate an SS guard captured by U.S. troops, while in the background American soldiers summarily execute other camp guards

This picture was taken on April 29, 1945, the day of liberation at Dachau Concentration Camp. The man on the ground is an SS guard moments away from being executed by the inmates standing near him. During his time as a guard, he brutalized and murdered untold numbers of innocent men, women and children. Only at the point of death does he show remorse. He was executed with the shovel in the hand of the inmate on the left. An Allied soldier turns his back, refusing to intervene. On April 29, 1945 members of the 1st Company, 3rd Battalion, 157th Infantry, under the command of Lt. Col. Felix L. Sparks, entered Dachau. There they discovered a train of 36 boxcars bearing the corpses of prisoners who had been transferred to Dachau from other camps in the last weeks of the war. As the soldiers advanced, they found stacks of bodies in other parts of the camp and thousands of emaciated survivors. They rounded up the remaining camp guards as they found them. At some point, it was reported, one of...

How common were instances of sexual abuse in Nazi concentration camps

How common were instances of sexual abuse in Nazi concentration camps. The accounts that rap£ or prostitution was common, Were the guards were given "free reign" over the prisoners given view of them as subhuman The Nazis sort of developed a network of state-controlled brothels during the war. This included both the civilian and military brothels. The Nazis even set up brothels for the forced labor inmates that helped with the German war effort as incentives for higher production from prisoners in camps. Back then these brothels were suppose to serving several needs. For the soldiers that were far away from home, the Nazis thought that having these brothels would reduce the possibility of rape in occupied lands and reducing the sexual relations with impure local women or forced laborer's, as well. Heck, the Nazis tried to use these brothel women to cure homosexuality as a treatment with male prisoners that were gay. Regular German women were exempt from serving in these b...

The prisoners in concentration camps have sex with each other

The prisoners in concentration camps have sex with each other Steady on. Nearly all concentration camps were single-sex, and at those that held both men and women the sexes were usually kept separate, though at Auschwitz III (Monowitz) and possibly also some other sub-camps they worked together. At extermination camps (where the sexes were not separated) most of the prisoners were killed within 24 hours of arrival. Prisoners did not have privacy. Remember that at the time most people had a horror of same-sex relations, especially between men. However, some Kapos and even guards forced prisoners to have sex with them. In Night Elie Wiesel relates how he found his Kapo having sex with a female prisoner, and he (Wiesel) was given 25 lashes for finding them having sex.* In the Women’s Camp at least one guard forced another woman to have sex with her, and at many camps there was a piepel (camp bum boy). *He also describes the hanging of the piepel of a Blockältester ( ‘block senior’). ...
