Nazi wives know what their husbands did to the Jewish women in concentration camps
they knew exactly what was going on. Many women married while employed from an early age in the concentration camps themselves. It was a high paying job for a working class German woman at the time. Watch footage of the trials on YouTube.
Some women from Bergen belsen were tried along with the men, a few were convicted and sentenced to death or prison. Many other camps also employed women.
Looks like this sort of enviroment brought out the worst in seemingly harmless people. It was like some sort of pack mentality on a massive scale which involved women and children also.
Most of the German population was well aware that Jews were being murdered, and that the concentration camps were death camps. Nazi wives were no exception. In fact, women played an important if overlooked role in the perpetuation of the Holocaust. Try the book "Hitler's Furies" for more information, but think about it.
Josef Mengle and other Nazi doctors had nurses helping him. The SS employed hundreds of women as secretaries, whose duties included providing refreshments to the army at mass shootings and choosing what Jews to deport from the ghetto. Wives of German officials might have directly participated in killings themselves, but more often the support they provided at home, and their stealing of blond-haired, blue-eyed Polish children through "adoption", became a weapon of war.
Nevertheless, excepting concentration camp guards, fewer than five women have ever been put on trial for their role in the Holocaust. Sexism hurts everybody.
An SS Kommandant called Amon Göth struck up a relationship with a girl from Breslau called Ruth Irene Kalder. At some point in 1943, she and Göth eloped to Kraków-Płaszów death camp, which surely ranks as one of history’s less romantic honeymoon spots.
Göth was brutal even by SS standards. One of his past-times involved sitting in his house’s upper balcony, which had a wide view of the camp, and shooting at passing Jewish prisoners with his Karabiner 98k rifle.
Apparently the constant gunshots upset Ruth, and she issued an ultimatum: unless Göth stopped shooting Jews, she wouldn’t have sex with him. So he stopped.
Not the kind of heroism that gets written about alongside Oskar Schindler and Chiune Sugihara, but she probably saved a few lives, in her own way.
